Civil engineers spotlight one of their own for making world cleaner place

The regional chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers paid tribute to the memory and accomplishments of John Aveggio at its annual banquet in Arcata on Thursday, posthumously honoring the Humboldt County resident as 2011’s Engineer of the Year.

Aveggio, chief technical officer of SHN Consulting Engineers Geologists, Inc., was a chemical, environmental, and civil engineer who specialized in cleaning up other people’s messes. For 28 years, he conducted thousands of hazardous waste and pollution probes and clean-up operations.
